Academic Year Support
Students admitted to the mathematics graduate study program are guaranteed five full years of support – if they are making satisfactory progress toward the Ph.D. During this period students are usually supported through a combination of teaching assistantships and research fellowships with health insurance costs paid directly by the university.
Our goal is for all of our students to graduate in five years and secure a good job. Over the last few years more than 75% of students have achieved that goal.
For the summers following a student’s first and second years of academic study, Ph.D. students are guaranteed summer research fellowships from The Graduate School. For a student’s later years, funds often come from a grant held by the student's adviser or by teaching.
