In this talk we discuss the issue of cancer overdiagnosis and overtreatment as a multi-scale problem at the interface of cancer biology, population health and patient preferences. We highlight recent parallel developments in the fields of cancer biology and population-based estimation of overdiagnosis, and we argue that effective approaches to the problem of overdiagnosis and overtreatment requires approaches that integrate evidence from different spatio-temporal scales.
