The department offers two awards to honor outstanding students in our program.

### Karl Menger Award

The Karl Menger Award, first given in 1989, is a cash prize awarded annually by the Department of Mathematics for outstanding performance in mathematical competitions.

The selection committee is appointed by the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Karl Menger (1902-1985) was a distinguished mathematician who made major contributions to a number of areas of mathematics. The Karl Menger Award was established by a gift to Duke University from George and Eva Menger-Hammond, the daughter of Karl Menger.

### Julia Dale Prize in Mathematics

The Julia Dale Prize is a cash prize awarded annually by the Department of Mathematics to a mathematics major (or majors) on the basis of excellence in mathematics.

A selection committee is appointed by the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Julia Dale, an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Duke University, died early in her career in 1936. Friends and relatives of Professor Dale established the Julia Dale Memorial Fund, the income from which supports the prize. It was the first memorial fund established in honor of a female member of the Duke faculty.

**Excellence in Mathematical Research Award**

The Award for Excellence in Mathematical Research is given annually to one or more undergraduate students for their outstanding research in mathematics. The selection committee is appointed by the Chair of the Mathematics Department. The fund will also provide more general financial support to enrich undergraduate activities in mathematics.

The fund for this award was established in 2018 by a gift from David and Vivian Kraines and by contributions from many alumni of the Math Department.
