President and CEO, Roper St. Francis Healthcare – Charleston, SC

1999 Major: Mathematics and Chemistry; 2008 M.B.A. and certificate in Health Sector Management

How has being a Mathematics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"I ALWAYS encourage strong students in mathematics to consider majoring in mathematics. I believe that the skills I learned as an undergraduate math major have been key in shaping my current career--the CEO of a health system. My strength was and continues to be my ability to use analysis to look at a problem."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Mathematics programs?

"Make sure that you take some significant courses in statistics and computer programming...my only regret from my undergraduate education...wish I had spent more time on the applied mathematics than things like abstract algebra--the applied I use all the time--abstract--not so much!"
