Jonathan Michala, B.S. 2020

Research Assistant Grad Student, University of Southern California – Los Angeles, CA

2020 Major: Mathematics with minor in Computer Science

How has being a Mathematics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"I hope to be a mathematician or a quantitative researcher because of Duke's math program.

"Computer Science has helped me greatly in math research and broadening my possibilities for areas of study."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Mathematics programs?

"College is a great time for exploration of career paths, so definitely prioritize those experiences which will help you the most in that exploration. This can come in the form of a class (mine was topology), but often they are extracurricular like research over the summer or some independent reading with a professor or grad student. Have conversations and spend time with people at various stages in a path you're exploring to really get a sense for what it will be like. Find a mentor whom you admire."
