William Garrett Mitchener, B.S. 1999

Professor of Mathematics, College of Charleston, Charleston SC

1999 Major: Mathematics and Computer Science

How has being a Mathematics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"It was a big step toward becoming a math professor."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Mathematics programs?

"Make friends, work as a team. In other disciplines, the most difficult material is usually the math, which means that as a mathematician, you have a head start. I prefer to learn as much as I can about many fields and sub-fields within mathematics, computing, and science in general. That means I'm not an absolute expert in any specialty, but I can talk to a broad range of specialists and make interesting connections."
