2013 Major: Mathematics
"I found Duke Mathematics to be extremely challenging and unforgiving. Those with the work ethic and ability to keep up with the course load were able to excel and learn. However, as a student a bit in over my head, I really struggled to find supportive environments to foster my own mathematical journey. As a middle school teacher, I do my best to make sure that my classroom is welcoming to all students, regardless of ability and prior knowledge."
"My greatest pieces of advice are: 1) Remember that students are coming into the program from diverse backgrounds. What is easy for you may be challenging for another, and vice versa. Be empathetic in how you communicate about things like grades and personal experiences. 2) Attend office hours!! Do all your homework!! Ask for help when you're stuck!! 3) Find other students to study with and work on problem sets with. 4) Do a little planning ahead to make sure you are taking courses that match your interests. There are a lot of requirements to meet the major, so it's wise to know what's coming and when you hope to take it."
