American Mathematical Society
The American Mathematical Society funded graduate student chapter at Duke University was founded in 2017. The chapter's first major organizing effort was the hosting of the fourth Triangle Area Graduate Mathematics Conference (TAGMaC), which invited graduate students in mathematics across Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University to give talks about research level mathematics, directed to a graduate student audience. This now established tradition sees each of the three major graduate mathematics departments in the Research Triangle alternate each semester in hosting TAGMaC.
The Duke AMS chapter is devoted to establishing a strong mathematical community among the students in our department and to promote conversation, collaboration, and friendship among students across research and institutional milieus. In addition to hosting TAGMaC every third semester, the AMS chapter at Duke hosts a graduate student luncheon every semester. In particular, the fall semester luncheon is designed to introduce the first year students to our community and dispel arbitrary boundaries between them and later year students so as to foster more discussion as to what mathematical research and graduate student life entail. Towards the end of the Spring 2018 semester, the chapter will organize another luncheon, aimed at affirming community and at facilitation reflection on the year and goals for the summer and subsequent school year.
Association for Women in Mathematics
The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) Duke Student Chapter is a community of Duke undergraduate and graduate students associated with the national AWM organization. Some of our chapter’s goals are to create a supportive local network of math students and faculty, engage in community outreach, foster dialogue on diversity and inclusion in mathematics, and connect with the larger AWM and Duke communities.
Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics
SIAM (Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics) is the leading international organization for professional research in applied mathematics. The Duke SIAM student chapter was established in January 2017 and is a group for students, postdocs, faculty and staff interested in applied mathematics. Our goal is to foster an active interdisciplinary STEM community at Duke by organizing professional, academic, and social events for members.
