2003 Major: Mathematics and Spanish

How has being a Mathematics graduate from Duke helped shape your professional success?

"Because I am in finance, having strong quantitative abilities and the ability to model has been very valuable and has made my job easier for me. People also have given me "credit" for being a Math major as that translates to "being smart and capable". As a female, it's also been very helpful to differentiate myself from others."

What advice would you give students in Mathematics?

"Mathematics is a wonderful core discipline, but it's also very important to be well rounded. I think using time to study other topics that are humanities based really helps to round out the degree. Such study can be more casual. For instance, I took an architecture class (a very mathematical art) which is something I reference back to when I'm chatting with clients, or traveling. Also if you plan to transition into finance I highly recommend taking accounting and intro to finance so that you have a basic understanding of those core areas."
