2008 Major: Mathematics and History

How has being a Mathematics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"I lead the principal team of mathematical and scientific experts that designs and operates the infrastructure underlying the global food system. Our work implicates thermo- and fluid-dynamics, various flavors of mathematical optimization, agent-based modeling, complex systems analysis and other topics that I first explored as a Duke math major."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Mathematics programs?

"Learn and master the basics. Machine learning and optimization are advancing so quickly that there’s no way to study them only in college and remain at the state of the art through your career. And learn to explain the value of these methods. One probably can’t teach a warehouse operator abstract algebra in an afternoon, but one can explain its utility."
