1992 Major: Mathematics

How has being a Mathematics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Being a math major at Duke more than anything taught me how to be an effective problem solver. I now have a methodology for solving problems that adds value to my life every day. For my early career, this was instrumental as a software developer. As I rose the ladder in terms of role and responsibility, it continued to pay dividends to be able to logically look at an issue and understand how to solve the problem. This has even helped from a personal perspective as I deal with problems that arise every day, from troubleshooting when things don't work in my home or a device... the skills and lessons I learned from being a math major at Duke continue to serve me well."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Mathematics programs?

"Continue to challenge yourself and think more about "why" you're doing something as opposed to the specific task. It's far too easy to think of the problem you're solving in math and disregard the real world application of that if you're not going into a profession related to mathematics. But if you focus on the broader skills that you're developing and learn to apply that to anything that you're working on, you'll see how profound that skillset can be and how broadly applicable it is."
