Jessica Erdmann-Sager, B.A. 1996

Plastic Surgeon, Brigham and Women’s Hospital – Boston, MA

1996 Major: Mathematics

How has being a Mathematics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Actually being a math major helped solidify my decision to go into medicine. I enjoyed math but realized that I did not want to spend my life doing it and also wanted to work more closely with and on the behalf of others. After considering more math-related careers, I opted to go into medicine. Now as a plastic surgeon, I use basic (elementary school level) math to optimize my results."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Mathematics programs?

"To carefully consider your personality traits and what makes you happy. Do you enjoy sitting in a room by yourself? Do you like to be surrounded by other people all the time?"
