How has being a Mathematics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"I came to Duke interested in both teaching and research. During my time as a grad student I realized that while I enjoyed research, I loved teaching. I also realized I was much better as a teacher than as a researcher. My time at Duke helped me refine my career path and prepared me for success in a teaching career. More specifically, the calculus reform efforts that were occurring in early to mid 90s helped me see that teaching can be approached in an innovative scholarly manner."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Mathematics programs?

"To grad students in math: Some come to Duke knowing exactly who they want to work for and what they want to study. I wasn't one of those students. It took me awhile, but I found my way. You will too."
