2004 Major: Mathematics and Chemistry

How has being a Mathematics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"The Duke Mathematics program fostered my life long love for problem solving, puzzles and mathematics. The range of courses I took showed me a wide array of mathematics, taught by faculty who clearly loved their fields and their work. It was through this exploration that I found how one could really use mathematics to address real world problems, which has become my passion.

"Double majoring in Mathematics and Chemistry opened the opportunity to pursue Applied Mathematics in my career. My primary field of research is now Mathematical Biology, where I use knowledge from my chemistry and math majors, for foundational understanding of the problems I am addressing."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Mathematics programs?

"One piece of advise I would give is to be open to try all areas of mathematics. There may be entire fields of mathematics that you are unaware of, but may suit your interests."
