How has being a Mathematics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"While in graduate school and after earning my PhD I have primarily worked in mathematical finance as a strategist on Wall Street. I also did research on mathematical biology and toxicology for some biotech and pharma companies before migrating into finance. I wouldn’t trade my math PhD for anything, though I would have done it earlier. I also came back and taught math finance and Econ at Duke for a couple of years, which I enjoyed immensely."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Mathematics programs?

"Math is truly the most flexible STEM area there is. Alone or combined with other degrees, it will open doors for you that few other disciplines can. More importantly, math changes the way that you think and demands rigor. It’s worth all the effort you put into it."
