How has being a Mathematics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"As a Mathematics graduate from Duke, I have had access to a wealth of opportunities and I was well equipped to be successful within those career opportunities. I gained a thorough skill set in analytical thinking and problem solving that has supported me in a variety of job functions. A few of those roles include investment banking analyst, business analytics consultant for government agencies, non-profit education founder, day trader, math education digital content creator, and educator. Creative and analytical skills are highly desired by employers and are the foundational 21st century skills that allow professionals to become more valuable in their field. I gained a structured way to solve problems that I have been able to apply to the real world - collect the data, break down its premises, observe the relations that keep or systematically solve their parts in a rational way, look for the best logic, see the possible solutions and relate the data we have to reach the conclusion. In the 21st century labor market, it is more common that you will explore a variety of career opportunities. Once thing you can be sure of as a mathematics major is that you will be highly sought after, a key player on your team due to your ability to think through complex scenarios with ease and will have a greater capacity for tackling difficult projects. These elements will serve you well as you craft a successful career."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Mathematics programs?

"Always be willing to take on challenges because the people who win in life are the ones who do the hard stuff that others aren't willing to do. A math degree will serve as a great foundation for your career. Perhaps, you may want to add a 21st century skill like coding or digital marketing to complete your experience/knowledge base. This way you have a problem solving skill set along with a suite of skills that will allow you to build a portfolio that allows employers to see what you can do. This will inherently increase your value to the marketplace."
